Comparing quotes badly is the most expensive habit in small-business buying, and it usually comes down to comparing the wrong number. Four things move a quote away from its headline price:
Unit price is not the price
Freight, packing and handling charges sit outside the unit price. A quote that looks 4% cheaper per piece often is not, once the truck is paid for.
GST is not always the same
Different HSN classifications, or a composition-scheme supplier who cannot pass on input credit, change what the order actually costs you.
Lead time has a price
A supplier two weeks slower may cost you a production stoppage or an air freight bill. Put the dates side by side before you decide.
Payment terms are part of the deal
Thirty days of credit is worth real money. Note that a micro or small supplier must be paid within 45 days regardless of what is agreed.
