A checksum test is a strong negative filter and a weak positive one. If the number fails, it was never issued — that is close to certain, and worth acting on. If it passes, you have only established that the number is the right shape. It does not tell you the registration is active, that it belongs to the person emailing you, or that they can deliver what they quoted.
So treat a pass as permission to continue checking, not a clean bill of health. Three things are worth doing next:
Udyam verification
A supplier claiming MSME benefits — or asking you to respect the 45-day payment rule — should have a Udyam registration number. Verify it on the government's Udyam portal, and check the category: micro, small or medium changes what applies.

If the supplier is a Pvt Ltd or LLP, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs register shows incorporation date, registered office and whether filings are current. A company that has not filed in years is a warning worth heeding.

This is the check people skip. The legal name on the GST record, the bank account and the invoice must be the same entity. A mismatch between who quoted you and who you are paying is the single most common thread in advance-payment fraud.
