Why B2B directories flood you with spam leads — and the alternatives
If you have ever posted a requirement on a B2B directory, you know what happens next: your phone rings for a week, most of the callers have not read what you need, and you still have to work out which of them is genuine. That is not a bug you can avoid by being careful — it is how the model works.
Why directories flood you with calls
Large directories monetise largely by selling buyer enquiries to suppliers. One requirement is distributed to many suppliers who have paid for leads, and each of them contacts you. From the platform's side, more contact is the product. From your side, it is a screening job you did not ask for — and the quotes that follow are rarely comparable, because everyone is working from your one-line enquiry.
None of this means the suppliers are bad. It means the matching is left entirely to you.
The main alternatives, and their trade-offs
- Managed B2B marketplaces. They become the merchant — you buy from the platform, not the maker. Convenient and reliable for standard categories; less suited to a one-off, custom, or long-tail requirement, and you are buying at their margin.
- Government procurement (GeM). Strong for verified sellers, built for public buyers; heavier process than a private business usually wants for a single order.
- Do it yourself with search + vetting. Skip directories, find candidates by search and referral, and vet them yourself. This gives you the most control — it just takes time. Our supplier sourcing guide is the full workflow.
- A neutral quote concierge. Someone does the sourcing, vetting, and negotiating for you and hands back a clean comparison — without becoming the merchant or reselling your enquiry.
What to look for whichever route you pick
- Matching, not blasting. You want a short list of suppliers who fit your spec, not your number handed to fifty people.
- Vetting up front. GST, filings, and real capability checked before a quote reaches you — see how to vet a supplier.
- Comparable quotes. Priced against the same RFQ so you can compare like-for-like.
- Your details kept private. Your requirement should not become a lead that is sold on.
How Hushcontracts differs
We are the concierge option, built for the long-tail requirement directories handle worst. You post one requirement; a real person sources and vets suppliers and negotiates on your behalf; you get a clean comparison of quotes and deal with the supplier directly. Your number is never sold as a lead, it is free to post, and you deal with the supplier directly.
